FrontPage Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

Within this section we hope to be able to answer all or most of the question regarding the use of FrontPage2000 for web site design. We plan to cover the most commonly asked questions and explain the ins and out of this powerful web page generation tool. If we don't cover your specific question feel free to e-mail us about it and we will answer you within 24 hours. You can reach our customer service at oates622@redshift.com.

Here are the TOP 10 FrontPage FAQ's

1) Can I design my own themes?

Absolutely! FrontPage2000 comes with 67 themes - but by default at installation, only 26 of them load. If you didn't opt to install them at FrontPage installation you can get them from the installation CD.

You can change all of these themes by right-clicking the background of the theme or you can also get to "theme properties" through "Format / Theme". This will bring up the Theme dialog box and you can review all 67 themes here. You can also create new themes by modifying these existing themes by using the "Modify" button and then selecting "Colors", Graphics" or "Text". After modifying your theme you can rename it and save it using "Save As.."

You can also find many professional themes on the Internet by doing a search using "FrontPage themes" as the keyword phrase. We also recommend " FrontLook" and " the Pixel Mill". E-mail us if you need any more help on this.

2) Do I have to put the navigation buttons in the same place on all my pages?

No, you don't. But having said that, we recommend that you keep your web pages consistent. Consistency allows visitors to "get the feel" of your website navigation capability. If you move the navigation buttons around to different locations on the pages your website will get "confusing" and you will loose visitors. We clearly opt for clarity and consistency in you web page design.

3) Can I edit the HTML code in FrontPage or will this cause a problem?

Certainly! That is what HTML mode is for, but obviously any mistake you make in the hand coding won't be corrected by FrontPage. After you do hand coding changes always check your work in "Preview" mode to see what your work looks like in a browser.

We recommend that you learn some basic HTML so that you can do some hand coding. FrontPage doesn't understand anything about web page optimization. We recommend that you be able to change the "Title tag" and be able to add "Meta Description" and "Meta Keyword" tags. We recommend that you go to our " I-Net Marketing Books" page and buy "HTML for the World Wide Web" by Elizabeth Castro. It's a great reference book, easy to follow, has easy to understand examples and covers all you need to know about HTML.

4) What are shared borders and why do I need them?

Shared borders is FrontPage's way to break up your web pages and give you common content within shared borders. What does this mean to you? It means that all common page content, items such as logos, navigation links, opt-in list forms, etc., that do NOT change from page to page should be in shared border areas. Once you have designed those areas you don't have to bother with them again if you change the main page content.

5) Will FrontPage's shared borders work on Unix servers?

Shared borders use "Include Files". These files are used on both Unix and Microsoft Windows based servers.

6) Why can't I edit my pages in "Preview" view?

FrontPage is a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor with three viewing modes, "Normal", "HTML" and "Preview". You can edit in Normal and HTML mode while Preview shows you what the code looks like in a browser. It's for checking your coding NOT for changing your coding. You can easily swap back and forth between Normal and Preview mode by using the keyboard controls "Control-Page Up" and "Control-Page Down".
NOTE: WYSIWYG didn't always work very well in FrontPage97 & 98 and this was my biggest gripe with those products, but seems to have been corrected in FrontPage version 2002. It's worth the price of the upgrade to have this feature fixed.

7) Do I have to publish my FrontPage 2000 website to an ISP that provides the FrontPage extensions?

NO, but why ask for problems? If you are going to invest in the money and time to learn FrontPage why short-change yourself by choosing an ISP that doesn't offer the FrontPage extensions. All the better, or should I say professional ISP's, offer the extensions.

Check out our web site hosting options and see what you get for your money.

8) How do I add or change the text on my navigation hover buttons?

To add a "Hover Button" put the curser where you want to insert the button and select "Insert/Component/Hover Button" and the "Hover Button Properties" dialog box will open.

If you are adding a new button to a theme that already has hover buttons you should "Right Click" the existing button to bring up the "Hover Button Properties" dialog box and right down all the settings. Then do the 1st paragraph, copy all the settings over and type in the "button text" and click "OK".

9) What graphic file formats can I use on my web pages?

Basically, there are only 3 graphic file formats you can use on you website: GIF (Graphics Interchange Format), JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) and PNG (Portable Network Graphics). Realistically speaking, GIF and JPEG are the only formats that you need to worry about. Here are the differences.

GIF: 8 bit and gives you only 256 colors to work with. Usually used for lettering, logos, banner ads, animated ads, etc. The Pixel Foundry logo and items in the left hand shared border are GIFs.

JPEG: 32 bit and gives millions of colors. This format used for photographic elements and can be compressed for quick loading. I've used this format for displaying house pictures for Real Estate websites.

PNG: Offers true color up to 48 bits and does not suffer image degradation when compressed as does JPEG. It is supported by the major browsers and most WYSIWYG editors.

 10) Where can I find more resources for FrontPage?

Well you can start with this website by looking at these pages.
Online Web Training    Information Sites    I-Net Marketing Books
I-Net Marketing Courses  Software Tools

You can also do a search on Yahoo and Google for the search phrase "FrontPage web site design and promotion" and you will get hundreds of websites related to that phrase. Maybe even this website since it is ranked tenth for that phrase in both search engines!
